Monday, 11 January, 2021

Local MP Maria Miller joined a meeting of the UK Wedding Taskforce today to offer her support to the businesses involved in this sector that have been impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. The UK Wedding Taskforce is a Government supported industry group to ensure the full impact of the pandemic on this disaggregated sector is fully understood by the Government and that the right support is in place.

Maria Miler said, “There are usually more than 250 000 weddings a year but last year 220 000 were postponed. A huge variety of business make weddings memorable, once in a lifetime events including wedding venues, photographers, restaurants, hotels and dress makers and all of these businesses provide jobs and livelihoods for more than 400 000 people across the UK. The Taskforce has successfully brought together this sector to ensure the Government is fully sighted on the issues, and to work with the sector to put in place a recovery plan to help save jobs and livelihoods. “

The Task Force is meeting Minister Paul Scully next week and the round table provided an important opportunity for the sector to talk to MPs in advance of that.

Maria went on to say, “The sector faces a unique situation and I look forward to being fully briefed on what support the Government has been asked for, following the meeting with Minister Scully next week. I stand ready to support local Basingstoke businesses who have been affected by the devastating consequences of Coronavirus and that they have their voice heard by Government.”
